How we choose our picks

We do not claim to lab-test every filter ourselves. Instead, our editorial process is research-driven and transparent:

• Aggregate independent testing. We read and compare performance data and verdicts from established, independent testing organizations that perform controlled contaminant-reduction testing.
• Verify certifications. We cross-check NSF/ANSI certifications (NSF 42, NSF 53, NSF 58, NSF 401) against manufacturer documentation and certification databases.
• Weight by real use-cases. A great whole-house system is not the best solution for a backpacker. We match each pick to a specific buyer need (tap water, well water, travel, renting, budget).
• Note the trade-offs. Every recommendation lists genuine cons, not just praise.

How we stay independent
